Jean Giraud, the french artist better known as Moebius , left the planet last week. We are all the poorer for it. Both Mikolaj and I are fans of his work, and Mikolaj prepared this tribute to a man who's legacy will last a long time. Although he did work on American comics, and lent his unique design sensibilites to many movies, his most interesting work was always his most personal - those slightly oblique, elliptical stories with somewhat trippy but always wildly creative imagery. If you haven't read his original stuff, I highly reccomend it. |

While looking at the pages in the Gallery recently, I noticed an inordinately large number of hits for page 325. I was puzzled at first at why this page in particular should be attracting any particular attention. Then, I looked at the page's title.
I don't know how many of you have noticed, but every page of Dire Destiny has it's own title. They can be pretty random, but occasionally I find some kind of oblique cultural reference or quote which relates in some way to what's happening on the page. I've used song titles, famous (or not-so-famous) quotes, and even spell names from Dungeons & Dragons.
The title for Page 325 was supposed to be "Sanctum Sanctorum", which is a latin phrase meaning "Holy of Holies". I first encountered the term as the name of the secret lair of Doctor Stephen Strange . Due to a quirk of typgraphic clumsiness, however, the name entered for the page was "Sanctum Santorum". As you might know, Rick Santorum is one of the current candidates for the US Presidency. I can only imagine the head scratching this might lead to if someone researching the candidate wound up here by mistake. I am not a supporter of Mister Santorum, and so I'll just say that any implied connection between the fiction religious organization in this comic and any actual religiously minded political candidates is entirely unintentional.
Of course, there is that other definition which is sometimes associated with the word "santorum", which I will not utter here. I never originally meant to imply that the Yggdrassil church was full of shit, however there is a certain poetry to the phrase which I feel would be a shame to abandon. So I'm not going to correct the typo.
It's also worth noting for you Pathfinder fans out there that The Very Last Book About Mounted Combat is now on sale in PDF form! I also hope to see it on sale at the Paizo website sometime soon. |

Gah. February's pretty much gone and I feel like I missed it. So much to do, and absolutely no time in which to do it. I've got deadlines that are coming up this summer and I can already feel them breathing down my neck even though they're four months away. Major stress time for Rob. By now I'm sure everyone has heard about the absolutely ridonkulous success of the Order of the Stick's kickstarter drive . I am floored by it, myself. Rich tells a hell of a story, though - and he's done an awesome job of building a community around his work. We once tried to set up a forum here, but there wasn't enough traffic to keep it alive. I'm working on a revamp of the site now, and I hope at some point we can get a new forum up and running. I know there are people out there reading - quite a few of you I've met at Gen Con over the last couple of years! More conventions - that's another plan for the future. Time, however, is my enemy. I have put two major projects in front of myself this year besides Dire Destiny, and I need to get cracking on them. One more thing: The Very Last Book About Mounted Combat is officially for sale now. There will be a PDF version available very soon, which I hope to link you to in the next update. I know there are Pathfinder players out there in the audience - check it out! I guarantee you won't be disappointed. |
